Food and Family - A Personal Vision

Food and Family is a collection of writing about children, family life, good food and recipes. Created by a mother of three as a space to share all the advice, cookery books, fun fiction, recipes and natural health ideas that have supported her on the eventful journey from starting a family, with all the joys and stresses that brings, to the demands of everyday survival with school age children...always a challenging but rewarding task.

Recipes To Feed The Family

Food and Family specialises in quick and easy recipes to feed the family, simple baking recipes (South African buttermilk rusks, excellent rye bread) and delicious recipes for family celebrations, as well as information about healthy food, natural health remedies, kids' toys made from natural materials, suggestions for home-made kids' parties without the sugar high – all the things we are aiming for in our families.
Aiming for but not always achieving, I have to admit to my original, idealistic standards of nutrition slipping as the children left toddlerhood behind, but hope I have found a happy medium. Plastic toys still too often crunch underfoot, comfort food, chocolate cake and biscuits are too delicious to miss, so chocolate cake recipes will find their way onto the recipes page!

Add Your Own Recipes To Food And Family

Recipe pages will be added to Food and Family regularly – if you have a favourite recipe you’d like to share, please add it to our recipes section, where you can automatically add your own favourite recipes.
We’d also love to hear from you about any articles or advice on health or parenting that have been helpful to you in raising your kids.

Kids' Parties

Kids' parties don't have to be a nightmare, filled with hyperactive sugar overloaded terrors, who despite the glut of sweet stuff aren't enjoying the occasion as much as they could. Kids' parties can be more natural, exciting but with less of the artificially stimulated highs. Read through our basic tips for lessening the stress of children's parties - including some quick and simple recipes for kids' party food.

Food And Family Growing Organically

Food and Family is growing organically, with more information being posted every week. Any blank pages will soon be filled with more food and family articles, with great links to children's clothes, toys and DVDs and always more tasty recipes!

Malva Pudding - South African Dessert Recipe

Almost every restaurant in Cape Town has Malva Pudding on its dessert menu. It is rich, delicious and indulgent and has to be tasted at least once on a gourmet tour of Cape Town. Along with many other traditional South African dishes it gives a nod to the Netherlands for its origins. Essentially a rather homely baked cakey pudding, its restaurant version soaks itself in a rich, creamy sauce...

Pitta Bread Recipe

By: Kit Heathcock (2007-08-30)

My kids love pitta (or pita) bread, those flat round breads that open into pockets that can be stuffed with anything and eaten in your hands, the ultimate takeaway food package. I first encountered it as a container for falafel, spiced chickpea patties and salad, a trendy urban street food in London way back then. Now I use pitta bread as a freezer standby for ...
